Monitor arm for standing desk: what actually changes
A monitor arm for a standing desk is the same arm you would clamp to a fixed desk — the desk moves, the mounting problem doesn't. Three things do change, and two of them we can compute from our desk data.
Monitor arm for standing desk: the three checks that decide it
Three checks, in the order they actually kill a purchase:
- Clamp fit on a thin top. Sit-stand tops run thinner than fixed ones — 20–32 mm against 34–38 mm for the 3 fixed tops we have a figure for — and the underside is crowded with a frame, a crossbar and a control box. The clamp needs a clear span of back edge, not just a thickness that matches.
- Cable slack for the full travel. Every cable that leaves the desktop has to survive the desk's whole rise. It is the one failure a fixed desk never poses, and it has nothing to do with the arm.
- Rated load. Identical to a fixed desk: rated ≥ panel weight × 1.2. Height changes nothing about gravity.
What you do not need is an arm with more height range — the desk already does that job. That is the whole answer; the rest of this page is the arithmetic behind it.
Clamp range vs a sit-stand top
We hold 6 sit-stand desks, 5 of them with a recorded top thickness, and those run 20–32 mm. Every arm class we model covers at least 10–85 mm of jaw, so the top being too thick is rarely the blocker on a standing desk — you are at the easy end of the range.
Two things still catch people. 10–85 mm is our class model, not a promise about the arm in your basket — check the clamp range that arm's own maker prints, against the thicker tops in the table below rather than against the 85 mm ceiling. And the grommet fallback that rescues an over-thick fixed desk may not be there — none of the 6 records a factory cable hole, so confirm your own top has one before you count on bolting through it. Cable slack is the number your desk sets, not the arm
Power, DisplayPort or HDMI, USB, network — every run that leaves the desktop for the wall or the floor has to stretch by the desk's full travel. The slack you need is exactly the difference between your desk's lowest and its highest setting. Raise the desk to the top once: the cable that goes taut is the one that will be pulled out of its port or torn at the plug.
Route the run into a tray or channel bolted to the desk frame so it rises with the desk, and leave the slack as a loose loop under the frame where the column can't catch it. Then only the last drop, tray to wall, has to stretch.
Honest limit: our desk records carry top thickness and material, not column travel — we don't print a travel figure we haven't read off the manufacturer's own page. Measure yours. It takes two minutes and it is the number that decides your cable lengths.
Why a standing desk doesn't need more arm travel
It is tempting to shop a standing-desk arm on height range, which is the one spec the desk has already solved. When the desk rises, the desktop and the monitor rise together; set the desk correctly at both heights and your eyes rise with them, so the screen's position relative to your face barely changes. The desk does the gross adjustment, the arm does the fine one.

Load doesn't change when the desk goes up
We call it a fit when the arm's rated load is at least the panel weight × 1.2, on any desk. A standard gas-spring arm rated 8 kg really covers panels up to 6.6 kg. The weight rule, and why the margin exists →
If the screen wobbles when you type at standing height, look at the desk frame before you blame the arm: an arm clamped to a surface that moves will move with it, and no arm damps that.

Do I need a special monitor arm for a standing desk?
No. A standing desk asks the same three questions as any desk: does the arm support your VESA pattern, is it rated for at least your panel weight times 1.2, and can the clamp grip your top.
