Mounting a monitor arm to a thick desktop

A monitor-arm clamp only opens so far. Most grip a desktop up to about 85 mm, but effective, confident grip is often ≤ 50 mm — so a chunky butcher-block or double-thick top can run out of jaw.

Check the clamp range

Find your desktop's thickness and the arm's stated clamp range. Solid tops around 25–40 mm are easy. Past ~50 mm, confirm the arm explicitly covers it or you'll be one turn short of a firm grip.

The grommet alternative

Most good arms include a grommet mount — a bolt through an existing cable hole (or one you drill). It sidesteps thickness entirely and is often sturdier on heavy panels.

FAQ

How thick a desk can a monitor arm clamp?

Typically up to ~85mm at the extreme, but many clamps grip confidently only to ~50mm. Check the arm's stated clamp range against your desktop thickness; past 50mm, verify or use a grommet mount.

What is a grommet mount and when should I use it?

It bolts the arm through a hole in the desktop instead of clamping the edge. Use it for very thick tops, tops with a back lip that blocks a clamp, or heavy monitors where you want maximum rigidity.
