Monitor arms on IKEA desks (Karlby, Linnmon, Alex, Idåsen)
IKEA desks are everywhere in workstations — and they're not all the same under the laminate. The hidden trap is the hollow honeycomb board (Linnmon, Lagkapten, Micke): clamp it wrong and you dent or crush the top.
Know your top
- Linnmon / Lagkapten / Micke — particleboard frame with a paper-honeycomb core. Clamp with a flat metal backing plate under the jaw to spread the load, and don't over-tighten.
- Karlby — thick (38 mm) veneer-over-particleboard. Solid enough to clamp; just confirm your clamp opens to 40 mm+.
- Alex desk — thin top with a drawer cabinet under one side; clamp on the clear side.
- Idåsen — sit/stand particleboard top, generally clamps fine.

FAQ
Can you clamp a monitor arm to an IKEA Linnmon or Lagkapten desk?
Yes, but those are hollow honeycomb boards, so put a flat metal backing plate under the clamp to spread the load and avoid crushing the surface. Don't over-tighten.
Is the IKEA Karlby thick enough for a monitor arm clamp?
Karlby is about 38mm thick veneer over particleboard — solid enough to clamp. Just check your arm's clamp opens past 40mm, since some slim clamps stop at 40.
