Monitor stand vs monitor arm: what your gear decides
Monitor stand vs monitor arm is usually argued on taste — desk space, adjustability, price. Your own gear often settles it first: an arm needs three things to be true at once, and a riser needs none of them.

Read it as a filter, not a preference. If your monitor has no VESA holes, or outweighs the arms you can buy, or your desk can't be clamped, the comparison is already over — and none of those facts are on the box.
How often the arm route actually closes
We keep specs for 40 monitors and 15 named desks, each one linked to the page we read it from with the date we checked it. Run the three gates across that data and the arm route closes in three recognisable ways:
- No holes. 5 of 40 monitors have no VESA pattern at all. 2 of those mount only through the maker's own adapter configuration — Apple's Studio Display, for instance, is listed as compatible with a 100 × 100 mm VESA stand only in the configure-to-order VESA-adapter build. - Too heavy. Of the 33 monitors whose maker publishes a weight without the factory stand, 8 are heavier than the 6.6 kg an 8 kg standard arm truly covers at our 1.2× margin, and 2 are past the heavy-duty class (12.5 kg) too. Dell publishes the UltraSharp U4924DW at 26.8 lb (12.16 kg) without its stand — that alone asks for an arm rated ≥ 14.6 kg. For the remaining 7, the only published figure includes the stand, so we rule neither way.
- No edge to clamp. 2 of the 15 named desks are glass, where edge-clamping is the one thing nearly every maker prohibits. A riser doesn't care what the top is made of.
The other 35 monitors do carry a pattern — 34 of them plain 100 × 100 — so the first gate opens. Weight and desk still have to clear, and once all three do, it really is a preference.
When the stand is the right answer
- No VESA holes and no official adapter for your model.
- A glass top, or any desk you would rather not clamp or drill — a rented or shared desk included.
- A panel past every arm class, where the honest options are a specialised mount or the factory stand.
- You want the slot underneath: a riser buys height and a place to slide a keyboard, which an arm does not.
When the arm wins
An arm buys back depth, which a riser cannot: it carries the panel out over the desk edge, so the desktop under the screen comes back. It also decouples the screen from the desk — height, tilt and swivel move independently of where the monitor's own stand would put it — and it puts two panels on one clamp point, with each arm of a dual mount rated separately (our dual class is 8 kg per arm). What we check, and what we don't
Our checker computes the arm side of this question only: VESA pattern, rated load at the 1.2× margin, and the clamp against your desk. There is no riser or stand model in the database, so we will never hand you a verified fit for one — treat the stand column as the route that stays open when a gate on the arm side fails.

Is a monitor arm better than a monitor stand?
Not automatically — it depends on whether your gear passes three gates. An arm needs a VESA hole pattern, a rated load of at least your panel weight times 1.2, and a desk edge it can clamp. Of the 40 monitors in our data, 5 have no VESA holes, and 8 of the 33 with a published without-stand weight are heavier than a standard arm truly covers. If a gate fails, a riser is the route that stays open.
Can I use a monitor arm if my monitor has no VESA holes?
Only through an adapter. 5 of the 40 monitors in our data have no VESA holes, and 2 of those mount via the manufacturer's own adapter configuration, chosen when you buy. Universal clamp-on adapters exist; read the adapter's own rated load, not the arm's, before counting on one. Otherwise keep the factory stand and raise it with a riser.
Which is better on a glass desk, a monitor stand or an arm?
A stand. An edge clamp concentrates force on one point, which is how tempered glass fails, so most arm makers prohibit clamping glass. A riser sits flat on the surface and needs no holes drilled.
